Cervicogenic Headache Checklist

May 15, 2020

Cervicogenic headaches can result from strained cervical spine muscles and/or connective tissue. The following checklist can help determine the cause.

  • How long have you experienced recurring headaches?
  • Do you ever have neck pain?
  • Does your head and neck pain fluctuate with different positions and times of the day?
  • Have you had a concussion, fall or bumping of your head, or been in a motor vehicle accident?
  • Do you experience head or neck pain when you wake up in the morning?
  • Do you experience head or neck pain more toward day’s end?
  • Are there certain repetitive activities (greater than 10-20 minutes), such as texting, computer entry, reaching forward or lifting, that bring on your headache or make it worse?
  • Do you have face pain, ear ringing (tinnitus), jaw pain or dizziness?
  • Do you experience tingling or pain going down your arm or upper back?

If “Yes” to two or more questions, your headaches could be cervicogenic in nature.
