Patient History
- 15-year-old female
- Diagnosed with AMPS
- Received outpatient physical therapy with limited progress
Condition Upon Admission for Inpatient Rehabilitation
- Walking with crutches
- Unable to complete leisure activities (dancing, riding bicycle, swimming)
- Required assistance for all activities of daily living (ADLs)
- Sleep disturbance
- Pain reported throughout body, but mostly in legs
- Reports of discoloration and swelling of lower extremities
Condition Upon Discharge
- Walking and running independently
- Riding bicycle for 20-plus minutes, dancing and excited to swim
- Supervision for showers without assistive device; independent for all other ADLs
- Reports improved sleep quality
- Less frequent reports/symptoms of pain, even at higher levels of activity
- Minimal to no observed discoloration or swelling of lower extremities
Alternative Without Inpatient Rehabilitation
- Ongoing specialist visits
- Continued use of pain medication
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Social isolation from friends and school
- Dependence with ADLs
- Ongoing need for DME
