Gait Training Technology Empowers Children to Walk
Good Shepherd Pediatrics is proud to be one of a handful of “Centers of Excellence” in the U.S. to pioneer Trexo Plus, a robotic gait training technology that encourages independence and physical activity.
The wearable device allows kids with lower-extremity weakness and/or spasticity to get on their feet and walk — maybe even for the first time.
Good Shepherd has six total devices in all three sizes (small, medium and large) for outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation settings. We are the only health-care provider on the East Coast to provide all three sizes of the wearable device in an outpatient setting, and the only inpatient rehabilitation unit in the country to feature all three sizes.
Where Trexo Plus Is Available
- Outpatient: The Hyland Center for Health & Technology, 850 S. 5th Street, Allentown, PA 18103
- Inpatient: Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Emily Howatt Pliskatt Pediatric Unit, 2855 Schoenersville Road, Bethlehem, PA 18017
How Gait Training Technology Works
“This life-changing technology helps children from ages 1 to teens wire new pathways in the brain to learn or relearn motor patterns, strengthen themselves and maximize their functional development,” says Kimberly Kuchinski, MD, MPH, Medical Director, Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. “The ability for our families to have access to this technology, whether they are with us for inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation, is extraordinary, and provides a seamless continuum of care.”
- Robotic legs allow children to walk hands-free in a safe, correct and consistent manner
- Weight-bearing design encourages kids to walk farther as they gain strength
- Trained therapists can control and monitor the device to promote a correct gait pattern
- Small fits 1-3 years old; medium fits 3-6 years; large fits 6 years and up
- The large size fits some adults
Who Can It Help?
Trexo Plus is ideal for children diagnosed with:
- Cerebral palsy
- Pediatric stroke
- Spinal cord injury
- Brain injury
- Gait disorders
- Mobility challenges
